The National Panhellenic Editors Conference
The National Panhellenic Editors Conference is a national organization of women communicators committed to a six-fold purpose:
- To promote professional enrichment, networking and development.
- To provide a forum for problem solving and idea exchange.
- To foster excellence in Panhellenic communication through education and recognition.
- To communicate Panhellenic and women’s issues through National Panhellenic Conference organizations to collegiate and alumna members, and campus and community leaders.
- To disseminate NPC news, policies and “Unanimous Agreements.”
- To promote a positive image of the National Panhellenic Conference.
The History of NPEC
The National Panhellenic Editors Conference was organized in October 1913 in Chicago during the 12th National Panhellenic Congress, now the National Panhellenic Conference. The NPC Chairman had summoned the “Greek journalism” ladies to meet concurrently with NPC. Thirteen editors were present at the first meeting and, according to the report, “Those fraternities whose editors were unable to attend were represented by other council officers. The whole field of fraternity journalism—purpose and methods—was open for discussion, and much profitable interchange of ideas resulted.”
Louise Fitch, Delta Delta Delta, was the conference’s first chairman. Pearla Green, Kappa Alpha Theta, was elected secretary. First mention was made of a committee on publicity, and the organizing group thought the Editors Conference would “become a permanent feature.”
The next meeting produced the first NPC assignment. The Congress moved to send the “Code of Ethics” to the editors to reword. This resulted in the “Panhellenic Creed,” which exists today.
Since 1913, the Editors Conference has met regularly in conjunction with NPC and has helped knit the editors into a congenial group bound by the ties of similar interests. The resulting personal associations and friendships are highly valued.
As would be expected, the National Panhellenic Editors Conference has expanded through the years. Its annual meetings extend over the several days the NPC delegates are in session. Meetings include professional development workshops on writing, editing, design, public relations, postal regulations, technology, problem solving, staff/volunteer relations and more. The editors have provided expertise for many NPC brochures and biennial reports. NPEC elects officers biennially: Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer.
