Significant Academic Achievements

The all sorority average has been above the all-women’s university average for the past 13 semesters, since spring of 2004. The Panhellenic Council implemented a Scholarship Policy, which places chapters on warning and probation periods if they are not above the all-women’s average, and it has been extremely successful for their academic pursuits.

Outstanding Programs and Ideas To Share:

Letters in the Library - Each semester, the Panhellenic Council sponsors a competition between the sororities on campus. This program encourages members to spend time in the library studying and focusing on academics. Each time a member is in the library, they log their hours in a binder kept at the circulation desk. The Junior Panhellenic Council counts up the hours for each chapter every week and presents the total at full council meetings. The winning chapter each semester is presented with a plaque at the Spring Greek Gala. This program has been extremely successful, and the campus now has implemented a sister program – Greeks in the Gym.

Faculty Advisors Many chapters choose to take advantage of the willing faculty on campus by having faculty advisors for their chapter. These advisors regularly meet with the Director of Fraternity & Sorority Life and provide a great resource for the women. Whether it is questions about courses to take, or tips on study habits, many chapters have benefitted greatly from this relationship.

New Member Programming -   The Panhellenic council at Drake has recently implemented a new New Member Program. Members must attend a kick-off event and two other events throughout the course of the year.  The purpose of this is to allow our new members to be acclimated to not only the Greek community, but the Drake community and culture as well. Many of these events are academically related, including distinguished lecture series and academic success seminars. This past fall, the campus Director for Academic Achievement presented a keynote on time management.

Scholarship Week The women from the Alpha Phi chapter on campus are hosted a Scholarship Week during the month of October. The focus of the week was the importance of scholarship and how the sisters in the chapter can help one another in their academic careers. Some events of this week included faculty advisors at a chapter meeting, a day to pack the library and an off-campus study session.
